3rd June.

Today we were off to visit the town of Thiers, famous for the production of cutlery over the years. Bit disappointed by the look of the town as we approached from below. Looked like a post card of a Mediterranean Sea side town going up the hill side just without the sea. It did have an old centre which we had a good walk around whilst Sue and Vince visited the knife museum. We found this small old shop selling old knives and cutlery. The gent behind the counter was nearly blind and had to peer at everything from about 5 centimetres away. After examining his dusty displays Annette purchased a pair of scissors (Eiffel tower design) and I found an old budding knife.

Next was a visit to the Chateau Aulteribe. Started building it way back in 1450. Unable to communicate very well with the lady manning the desk but paid up and then escorted into room 4 where we found a large group of people being given a tour of the house in French. We were walked through room 3 but completely missed rooms 1 & 2. No photos allowed. I don't know how they assess this rule as a lot of places will allow you to take photos, some with flash, some without. Maybe it's done on how important the person who decides thinks he or she is.

I got totally bored standing around not being able to understand what was being said for 15 to 20 minutes in each room when I would have been out in 5 anyway. The others said we had been short changed by not seeing the first 3 rooms. I thought we got off lightly. They went back, I stayed outside, had a good look around and took a few photos and was having a well earned lie down under a shady tree when they got back to the car.

I can never understand why people have to see everything. If I took that view I'd probably been locked up years ago.
